But just like people, no two galaxies are completely alike. The light reaching us today began its journey when the universe was only about 800 million years old. This bottom-up hierarchy is like brooks, feeding streams, which then converge to form great rivers. This is a watershed in the evolving universe. It appears to have grown old prematurely. Thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope, this area is captured in the deepest images of the universe ever made by humankind at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. In taking this picture, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys was not looking at any particular target. It is also within the deepest survey from the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Great Observatories Origins Deep angelica (or GOODS). The camera was taking a picture of a typical patch of sky, while Hubble's infrared camera was viewing a target in an adjacent galaxy-rich region.
